WHAT CAN YOU DO TO HELP?
This is by no means a comprehensive list, but it may give you some ideas if you don't know where to start.
Support pet shops that don’t sell animals, but food and accessories only.
Boycott all pet shops that sell animals. Tell them why you’re no longer buying from them.
If you are in the position to get a pet, adopt from an animal shelter or rescue organisation.
Do not support “free to good home” advertising, or people who sell animals on the Internet. Report any such post on the social media platform and to your local animal welfare organisation.
Do not buy exotic animals as they are not pets and belong in the wild.
Sterilize your animals and don’t give them away for free.
Rehome your pets through reputable organizations if you really can’t take care of them. Never “release” them into the wild.
Volunteer/foster – spend time at a local animal shelter or rescue organization.
Advocate for animals, take part in protests, and sign petitions.
Donate to rescue organisations and shelters if you can, especially towards sterilization.
Educate others and share “Adopt, don’t shop!” posts on your social media.
E-mail your councillor, asking them to call for a ban on animal trading in pet shops.
